Tinnitus In Children

 

Tinnitus is very hard to define and requires special treatment. Many peope of all ages get tinnitus and this includes young people and children. Often a child who has tinnitus thinks that it is normal and they often habituate to tinnitus meaning they don't get upset like adults do as they are generally unaware of it.

If your child has tinnitus what can you do?

the first step you should take is make an appointment with your local Doctor to check your child's ears and if need be then make a visit to the local ear hospital. The departments in these hospitals are usually called the 'paediatric audiology' department.

As there are not any medicines, operation or cures for tinnitus you need to look at ways you can help your child adapt to their tinnitus or ringing in ears

The types of treatments your Doctor may recommend can include:

-reassuring your son or daughter that everything is alright
-explaining what tinnitus is in simple details
-using sound generators to help them relax
-using background sounds to help them relax
-helping your child to relax in other holistic ways

Sound therapy has been used in recent times to help treat children with tinnitus and helps to make a situation whereby the tinnitus sounds are not so noticeable.

 

You can also try other methods such as playing a radio on low volume, turning on a fan or air conditioner nearby or even turning on the TV to a white noise channel.

 

The survey reveals that personal relationships aren't the only aspect of life that is affected for those with tinnitus. An astounding 42% of respondents said their tinnitus has a negative effect on their work life. Interestingly, 44% of those in work who haven't told their colleagues about their tinnitus said the reason was that they didn't think they would understand.
